The Class of 2019 will be honored at the Great Lakes Fruit, Vegetable and Farm Market EXPO in Grand Rapids on Tuesday, December 10 and featured in the October 2019 issue of both publications.

Michigan storyteller, historian and author Dianna Stampfler will present a lively and upbeat historical program on Wednesday, July 17 at 6:30pm at the Alice and Jack Wirt Public Library in downtown Bay City – drawing stories from her newly released best-selling book “Michigan’s Haunted Lighthouses” (which includes the Saginaw River Rear Range Light in Bay City on the cover). The program is free and open to the public as the community rallies to welcome the 2019 Tall Ship Celebration.

St. Julian Winery Honored with 34 Awards at 2019 Indy International Wine Competition

St. Julian Winery, recognized as Michigan’s longest-operating and most-awarded winery, submitted 34 wines into the 28th Annual Indy International Wine Competition and every single one of them was awarded a medal. Two wines were also named “Best of Class” including the 2018 Braganini Reserve Gruner Veltliner in the White Vinifera category and 2018 Braganini Reserve Vignoles Late Harvest in the Dessert Wines category.

Same Vines, New Vibe

A lot has changed at 185 Mount Tabor Road in Buchanan since the first grapevines were planted there in 1968. Incorporated as Tabor Hill Winery in 1972 and housing an award-winning restaurant since 1982, one of Michigan’s oldest wineries has now begun its next phase of life under new ownership, while celebrating a direct line to its historic past.

Capone (May Have) Caroused Here

There are as many tall tales and legends tied to American gangster Al Capone as there are presumed bodies ordered by his deadly hits. However, there is little question that he often escaped the heat of Chicago (both the temperature and the law) by sneaking off to Michigan, as far north as the Upper Peninsula.

Night Lights

As early as the 1820s, Michigan lighthouses have been protecting the Great Lakes shorelines. Today, one of the rarest experiences is to spend the night in one of these historic and often romantic beacons. Nationally, only a dozen or so lights have been converted into bed-and-breakfast inns with a handful of them found right here in Michigan.
