Have You Heard the BUZZ About Michigan’s Official State Insect?

Michigan’s first state symbol was the state flower, designated as the Apple Blossom in 1897. Since that time, 10 other symbols have been added to the list – from bird to reptile, gem to stone, wildflower to tree. A twelfth symbol is now under consideration in the legislature – Michigan’s official state insect! If members of the House and Senate can agree, the designation would leave Iowa as the only state in the Union without a state bug.

Storyteller, Historian & Author Dianna Stampfler to Present “Michigan’s Haunted Lighthouses” at the Alice & Jack Wirt Public Library in Bay City on July 17

Michigan storyteller, historian and author Dianna Stampfler will present a lively and upbeat historical program on Wednesday, July 17 at 6:30pm at the Alice and Jack Wirt Public Library in downtown Bay City – drawing stories from her newly released best-selling book “Michigan’s Haunted Lighthouses”  (which includes the Saginaw River Rear Range Light in Bay City on the cover). The program is free and open to the public as the community rallies to welcome the 2019 Tall Ship Celebration.

Grand Traverse Distillery Receives 8 Medals at National Spirits Competition

Grand Traverse Distillery was awarded eight (8) individual medals at the American Distilling Institute’s 11th Annual Spirits Competition, held as part of its annual conference in Baltimore, Maryland earlier this month.

Recognized as one of the 2013 “Michigan 50 Companies to Watch” In 2013, GTD currently operates five tasting rooms in Michigan – including two in Traverse City, one in downtown Frankenmuth; one in Leland; and one in Grand Rapids (with a new location, scheduled to open in September, 2017).
