In Search of S’mores

One of the best things about summer in Michigan is gathering around the campfire with a group of family or friends – enjoying song, stories and s’mores!

Just where and when did s’mores come from? The word is condensed version of the phrase “Some More” – a dessert first introduced by the Girl Scouts in the 1920s. The first recorded appearance of a s’more recipe can be found in the 1927 “Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts”

Keep Calm and Eat MICHIGAN Pie!

February is “Great American Pie Month” – and here in Michigan, where we’re a leading producer of countless fruits for tasting fillings – there countless places to dig into a delicious dessert pie. I am reminded of a New Yorker article from the 1980s by author Sue Hubbell (who, coincidentally is from Vicksburg, Michigan) called “The Great American Pie Expedition.” In her short story, Hubbell traveled around the country in search of the best fruit, cream, custard and meat pies.

I’ve been hitting antique fairs and flea markets since I was in college – intrigued by the reuse of quaint pieces of furniture that told a story, as well as served a purpose. Today, I’ve added the online market of eBay to my shopping repertoire – taking my treasure hunting to the virtual realm. I dare say, I’m bordering on addiction – but I see it as my responsibility to help “recycle” these items.

Fall is My Favorite Season!

The sights, sounds and smells are sensory overload at times – but I love it. Maybe it’s the vibrant hues of red, orange and gold on the trees or the sounds of leaves dancing in the streets. Perhaps it’s the harvest menu filled with pumpkins, squash, soups and stews to help take off the chill in the air. It’s also the layering of clothing – the boots and jeans, with flannel shirts, vests and scarves, that draw me into this short but colorful season.
