St. Julian Brings Home 34 Medals from International Eastern Wine Competition

St. Julian Winery was recently presented a total of 34 medals—including one “Best of Show,” four “Best of Class” and three “Double Gold” awards—at the International Eastern Wine Competition held February 6-7 in Santa Rosa, CA. St. Julian was one of five Michigan wineries from four distinct federally-recognized American Viticultural Region (AVAs) to participate in the competition.

Over the past 40 years of the Michigan Wine Competition, it is rare for a hybrid red grape to rise above all other dry red competitors. Yet, that is just what happened this year when Walloon Lake Winery’s North Arm Noir was named “Best of Class,” receiving a Double Gold Medal in the Dry Red category. The introduction of Marquette marks the dawn of a new era of cold-hardy red hybrid wine grapes; more often resembling traditional Vitis vinifera wines than those from existing hybrid cultivars.
