2022 Pure Michigan Milestone Celebrations!

Michigan was founded on January 26, 1837 as the 26th state of the United States of America…making this year our state’s 185th Birthday!

Each year, Promote Michigan compiles a list of tourism and hospitality related businesses celebrating milestones like a 5th, 15th, 50th, 100th (or more) anniversary.

250 Years (1782)

  • Fort Mackinac, Mackinac Island

225 Years (1797)

  • The very first lock on the St. Mary’s River was constructed on the north shore to provide passage for trade canoes. This lock was destroyed by American forces during the War of 1812 and cargoes once again had to be unloaded, hauled over land and reloaded until a new lock opened in 1855.
