Rumor has it that in the mid-1800s a group of freedom seekers took refuge at a small, secluded lake in Fawn River Township. They were hiding from southern landowners, bounty hunters, and even everyday citizens compelled by the Fugitive Slave Act to turn them in. Constantly looking over their shoulders, they were always seeking a safe place to rest. The Sturgis Historical Society presents “Dark Lake” on November 22nd, 2019. Join us at the Sturges-Young Center for the Arts to learn about 200 years of African American lineage in Sturgis, Michigan. Tickets are $10 and will be available starting October 11th. Thank you to our sponsors: the City of Sturgis, the Sturgis Area Community Foundation, and the Newell A. & Grace A. Franks Fund, a fund within the SACF.
