Growing up, many family traditions were centered around the table. After launching Promote Michigan in 2004, I found myself drawn to certain sectors of the hospitality industry: restaurants, wineries, breweries, distilleries, farm markets and agricultural organizations. Yes, I found a way to get paid to eat and drink…how lucky! I was also building a network and often friendships with chefs who were eager to feed my desire to learn more about locally-sourced ingredients and unique ways to prepare them into delicious dishes.

St. Julian Brings Home 34 Medals from International Eastern Wine Competition

St. Julian Winery was recently presented a total of 34 medals—including one “Best of Show,” four “Best of Class” and three “Double Gold” awards—at the International Eastern Wine Competition held February 6-7 in Santa Rosa, CA. St. Julian was one of five Michigan wineries from four distinct federally-recognized American Viticultural Region (AVAs) to participate in the competition.

Nancie Oxley Named Vice President of Pure Michigan’s St. Julian Winery

St. Julian Wine Company in Paw Paw has recently named Nancie Oxley as its Vice President. Recognized as Michigan’s first female winemaker, she joined St. Julian in 2002 as the Assistant Winemaker and moved up the ranks to Head Winemaker in 2010.

The Shed Beer Garden Opens Tuesday, May 24 in Traverse City (Grand Opening Set for June 3)

Traverse City’s newest outdoor dining and drinking space opens its gates May 23 and hosts their Grand Opening Party on June 3 from noon until 10pm. The casual dining and relaxed outdoor atmosphere of The Shed Beer Garden will provide a quick spot for lunch or the perfect place to enjoy dinner and drinks outside this summer.

Craft Beverage Entrepreneur’s Workshop Planned for Michigan Producers (Grand Rapids – Feb 12)

The Craft Beverage Education Association will bring its one-day educational workshop for in-planners to the Grand Rapids Doubletree Airport on February 12. The workshop is geared toward helping new craft beverage businesses navigate the complexities of startup. Registration is currently open—early-bird rate of $119 ends January 22. CBEA is planning similar workshops for cities across the country.
