“Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!” This famous cry was uttered by Rear Admiral David Farragut during the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864. During the battle, Farragut successfully led his fleet through a maze of torpedoes (naval bombs) and past three forts to secure a Union victory.
Learn more about this battle at the Harbor Springs Area Historical Society’s next Harbor History Talk on Thursday, May 24, 2018. Presenter David Lyle will explore the history of the Battle of Mobile Bay and its connection to Harbor Springs, focusing on the Dahlgren cannon in Zorn Park which was once aboard Farragut’s USS Hartford, on Decoration Day (now Memorial Day) in Harbor Springs and on the Union Navy.
Lyle’s talk begins at 5:30 pm on the second floor of the Harbor Springs History Museum. Be sure to arrive early to enjoy coffee and cookies before heading up to the lecture. Admission is $5 and free for current Historical Society members. Reservations are encouraged and can be made by contacting the Historical Society at (231) 526-9771.
